ABOUT
Ami Ellis lives and works in Guildford, Surrey. Her creative inspiration comes from nature, very often from her walks on the North Downs hills. Geometry and patterns occur everywhere around us, fused into “Organic geometry”, as she describes her style.
Continuously fascinated by leaves, petals, seed pods - so orderly formed, yet uniquely distorted - she “sees” them stretching and responding to the rays of sunshine or a gentle breeze. Imperfectly perfect. Beautiful creation.
Ami’s work includes ornamental sculptures and illuminated objects, crafted from her own handmade paper. Her pieces speak through their form, texture and light. The connection with nature continues through her dialogue with the plant fibres, as they are prepared and formed into paper sheets.
“I love that I am able to make my own material and customise it to the objects that I am about to sculpt...I can influence the thickness, texture, colour, and even properties like strength and shrinkage...The material itself becomes unique as well as the object.”

Having obtained university education in Architecture and Interior Design, followed by a Degree in Computing Science, Ami spent two enjoyable decades in Management, within the Education Sector. Her affinity with art and mathematics and her never-ending desire to design and create, combined with a pinch of coincidence and faith, nudged her into researching traditional crafts of papermaking and paper art. She completes the papermaking course at West Dean College and falls in love with this incredible material…
…And so - in 2020, Paperberry Studio was born. “Playfully excited.”

“This is my story about the wonderful material that I dare to talk to, sometimes have a dialogue with, and always am amazed at what it can be magically transformed into...”
